I awoke with a start, the smell of woodsmoke already thick in the air.
The sky had only just begun its slow transformation—faint silver brushing the eastern horizon, stars still clinging to their dominion. My limbs, curled beneath my cloak for warmth, groaned with stiffness. The cold of the mountain air seeped through everything, no matter how tightly I wrapped the purple wool around me. My fingers, numb and stiff, clutched the edge of the garment near my throat—a reflex more than anything else, though perhaps some buried instinct sensed the danger before I even opened my eyes fully.
